Stormville Airport : Stories : Carole Wyland
I heard from Carole Keeler Wyland about her Father learning to fly at Stormville Airport. Carole writes, "My Dad, Harold C. Keeler, initially learned to fly at Stormville in the early 60's. He earned many ratings, including helicopter and flight instructor. After his retirement from the NYPD in 1981, he retired to Florida and taught part-time at the Venice FL airport. I remember our family camping on weekends at the pond on the other side of the runway in the summertime so that Dad could fly. "The first time he took me up in a 2-seater, we flew over the Mid-Hudson Bridge, and he banked the plane over the river. When we landed, I had cuts in my palms from holding onto the wires across the windows. "In the 1970's, my husband learned to skydive at Stormville, and again, many weekends were spent camping at the airport with great friends. I am sorry to see it turn into a flea-market!" |
